Your doctor may order tests such as lab work and/or EKG to show your body is healthy enough for surgery and anesthesia. Depending on your medical history, you may need additional tests.
- Consult your medical doctor or cardiologist if you are taking Aspirin, Coumadin, Plavix, other blood thinners or herbal products. Ask if you should stop taking any of these medications before surgery.
- If you are diabetic, contact your primary care doctor or endocrinologist for instructions regarding your medication.
- If you take anti-inflammatory medicines (I.e. ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil, Aleve/Naprosyn, Relafen, Celebrex, etc), ask your surgeon if you should stop taking these medications before surgery.
- Please fill prescriptions ahead of time to minimize travel time on your surgery day.
- If you are having Upper/Lower Limb surgery, remove all nail polish and acrylic/gel or artificial nails on the hand/foot having surgery.
- If you develop a fever, cold, diarrhea, vomiting, rash or other illness, call your doctor. For your safety, your surgery may be postponed.
- You must have a responsible adult drive you home after surgery. Please plan for a flexible schedule as recovery time varies with each person. For your safety, it is recommended that a responsible adult stay with you at home until you are able to care for
- One business day before your surgery, please call 860-701-0140 between 1pm-4pm to receive the time you are to arrive at the surgery center. It is important to keep the entire day available, as we may not be able to accommodate a specific time request.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery unless instructed otherwise by your doctor or the Surgery Center staff. This includes water, coffee, tea, candy, mints, gum, chewing tobacco and ice chips. If you were instructed to take medication, please take it with only a sip of water. Failure to follow these instructions may result in cancellation of your surgery.
Day of Surgery
Shower or bathe the night before or the morning of surgery. Skin is the body’s first line of defense against infection.
- Remove all make-up and do not use oils, lotions, power, or scented products after bathing.
- Remove all jewelry and body piercing (unless having eye surgery) before coming to the Surgery Center. Do not wear metal hair clips or hairpins. Metal can interfere with the operation of some surgical equipment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you are having surgery on your arm, hand, leg, or foot, wear something loose enough to put over a bulky bandage. If you are having surgery about the waist, wear an oversized top that zips or buttons in the front. You may not be able to get the operative arm through a sleeve after your surgery. You may also want to bring a couple pillows and leave them in the car for comfort on the ride home.
- Do not wear contact lenses. If you use glasses and/or hearing aid(s), bring a hard case for their safekeeping. We provide containers for removable dentures and bridgework.
- Leave extra cash and valuables at home and empty your pockets of keys, nail clippers, pocket knives, scissors and anything that can be considered a weapon. We cannot be responsible for damage or lost property.
- Bring a photo ID and insurance card(s).
- Please take all your prescription medication, as directed, in the morning with a small sip of water (NO MORE THAN 2 ounces of water).
- If using an inhaler or medication for migraines, bring them with you to the center.
- Bring an updated list of your medications including dosages for all prescription, herbal, inhaled and over the counter medicines.
Day of Surgery at the Center
Please arrive on time to the Surgery Center and check in with the receptionist. The time you are given for arrival is an approximate time. Sometimes surgeries are cancelled and we may need to call you in earlier or surgery may take longer than planned and your surgery may be delayed. Your family or friend may wait in the waiting room.
- You will meet with an anesthesiologist if you are having anesthesia.
- An IV (intravenous) will be placed in an arm or hand vein if you are having anesthesia. The IV will provide fluids and/or medication during and after the surgery.
- Your surgical site will be identified, marked, possibly washed and hair removed before you go into the operating room.
- You may be given an antibiotic to fight infection and/or medication to reduce nausea.
- Sleeve like devices may be placed around the lower part of your legs to help prevent blood clots. These will inflate and deflate regularly to keep your blood moving.
- The operating room provides a safe and sterile place for surgery. The staff will be wearing special clothing, masks, hair covers and gloves to help prevent infection.
- The average stay after surgery is 30-60 minutes depending on the type of surgery and your own personal recovery. Upon completion of your surgery you will be offered a snack and a beverage. If you had general anesthesia, you may have a mild, sore throat. This will go away after drinking fluids. It is not unusual to feel a little sleepy, lightheaded or dizzy for several hours after your surgery.
Your Role in Recovery
After you have returned home, re-read the discharge instructions and follow your doctor’s orders regarding surgical site care, rest, medication, diet and activity.
- Deep breathing and controlled coughing help clear our lungs and aid in circulation. This can help prevent pneumonia.
- Walking and moving your legs will aid blood flow and body functions. This will help prevent blood clots. Stand up slowly to avoid getting dizzy. If you had leg or foot surgery, follow your doctor’s instructions regarding putting weight on the affected side. Remember rest periods are important as well.
- Follow and specific diet and/or fluid restrictions. A healthy diet and drinking water helps your body heal.
- To help prevent constipation while taking pain relievers, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Please ask your doctor if a stool softener would be helpful.
- Follow specific instructions given by your doctor regarding incision and bandage care to aid in healing and preventing infection. Wash your hands before and after touching your bandage and incision.
- Pain medication helps to reduce pain to a tolerable level, usually to 5 and under on a scale of 1-10.
Do not take additional Tylenol/acetaminophen while taking narcotic pain medication. Most pain medication already has Tylenol/acetaminophen in it. The maximum dose of Tylenol/acetaminophen in a 24-hour period is 4000mg.
- Take pain medication with food (unless told not to) to minimize nausea.
- Try to arrange taking pain medication before activity that may cause discomfort.
- When you are relaxed, pain medication works better.Try the tips below to help increase your level of relaxation:
- Dim lighting and listen to soft, relaxing music
- Position yourself for comfort
- Take a deep breath and exhale. As you exhale feel your body begin to relax from your head to your toes.
- Imagine yourself in a calm, peaceful place.
- As each breath becomes a little deeper, notice where your body feels tight and sore. As you exhale, feel the tightness and discomfort start to release.
An Advanced Directive is a statement that outlines the medical treatment you’d want or names the person you’d want to make healthcare decisions for you if you could no longer express your wishes.
This facility does not provide implementation of advanced directives, however, the following protocol is in place:
- This facility will post information at the front desk regarding our policy on advance directives.
- All patients will be asked if they have advanced directives.
- All patients are given information regarding CSCE advance directives prior to their surgery date.
- All patients will be informed that this facility does not honor Advanced Directives.
- All patients who present with advance directive (DNR order) will be asked to sign a waiver stating, “while at CSCE the DNR order will not be honored.”
- A copy of the advanced directive, if applicable, will be placed in the patient’s chart.
- All patients in life threatening situations will have life sustained at this facility and be transferred to the hospital via ambulance.
A copy of the chart (to include the advance directive waiver, if applicable) will be transferred with the patient to the hospital.

Patient Rights and Responsibilities
As a patient, you have the right to:
- Considerate, respectful care at all times and under all circumstances with recognition of your personal dignity.
- Personal and informational privacy.
- Confidentiality of records and disclosures. Except when required by law, you have the right to approve or refuse the release of records.
- Information concerning your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, to the degrees known.
- The opportunity to participate in decisions involving your healthcare.
- Competent, caring healthcare providers who act as your advocates.
- Know the identity and professional status of individuals providing service.
- Adequate education regarding self-care at home written in language you can understand.
- Make decisions about medical care, including the right to accept or refuse medical or surgical treatment.
- Impartial access to treatment regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, handicap, or disability.
- Receive an itemized bill for all services. Report any comments concerning the quality of services provided to you during the time spent at the facility and receive fair follow-up on your comments.
- Know about any business relationship among facility, healthcare providers, and others that might influence your care or treatment.
As a patient, you are responsible for:
- Providing to the best of your knowledge, accurate and complete information about your present health status including communicable diseases and past medical history and reporting any unexpected changes to the appropriate physician(s).
- Following the treatment plan recommended by the primary physician involved in your case.
- Providing an adult to transport you home after surgery and an adult to be responsible for you at home for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Indicating whether you clearly understand a contemplated course of action and what is expected of you and ask questions when you need further information.
- Your actions if you refuse treatment, leave the facility against the advice of the physician, and/or do not follow the physician’s instructions relating to your care.
- Ensuring that the financial obligations of your healthcare are fulfilled as expediently as possible.
- Providing information about an/or copies of any living will, power of attorney, or other directives that you desire us to know about.

Billing and Payment
You can expect the cost of your surgery to be significantly less than if performed at a local hospital. Constitution Surgery Center East accepts assignment from Medicare and is a participating provider with most health plans. Any insurance co payment will be collected upon admission. Please call your insurance provider to verify what your out of pocket expense for outpatient surgery will be. The center accepts cash, check, and all major credit cards.

From Norwich- Interstate 395 South: Take Exit 77 (the Crystal Mall exit) and turn left onto Route 85. Go to your second traffic light (after the Dunkin Donuts) and turn right onto Cross Road. We are the 3rd driveway on the right, between Curtin Livery Service and Shipman’s Fire Equipment.
From Old Saybrook & South-Interstate 95 North: Go over bridge and continue on I-95 North. Take Exit 81 and turn left at the end of the exit ramp. At traffic light turn left onto Cross Road. Continue past BJ’s Wholesale Club for approximately ½ mile and we are on the left side between Shipman’s Fire Equipment and Curtin Livery Service. If you reach the Route 85 intersection you have gone too far.
From Route 2 South & 85: Take Route 2 South to Route 11. When Route 11 ends in Salem turn left onto Route 82. Go straight until you reach the first traffic light (Salem 4 Corners). At the light, turn right onto Route 85. After you pass under I-395 (approximately 8 miles) go to your second traffic light (after Dunkin Donuts) and turn right onto Cross Road. We are the 3rd driveway on the right, between Curtin Livery Service and Shipman’s Fire Equipment.
From Route 2 North: Take Route 2 South to Route 11. When Route 11 ends in Salem turn left onto Route 82. Go straight until you reach the traffic circle. At the circle, turn right onto Route 85. After you pass under I-395 (approximately 8 miles) go to your second traffic light (after Dunkin Donuts) and turn right onto Cross Road. We are the 3rd driveway on the right, between Curtin Livery Service and Shipman’s Fire Equipment.
From Groton: Take I-95 South over Gold Star Bridge to Exit 81. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp. At 2nd traffic light turn right onto Cross Road. Continue past BJ’s Wholesale Club for approximately ½ mile and we are on the left side between Shipman’s Fire Equipment and Curtin Livery Service. If you reach the Route 85 intersection you have gone too far.
